COLLEGE APPLICATION BOOTCAMP

#accepted2021

What is this?

The Writing Hub’s College Application Digital Bootcamp is designed such that you not only come out with a completed personal statement but are also fully equipped with the tools to be able to replicate the process going forward. We want to develop your writing practice, hone your voice, and sharpen your individual style so that you can rely on this muscle in other facets of your life.

Who is it for?

This program is intended for high school seniors applying to universities for Fall 2021 admission. Should we choose to expand this criterion, we will be sure to announce this on our Instagram.

What does it entail?

Over the course of a month, Maame and Yaa will guide each participant (using the Zoom platform) through their writing process in three consecutive weekly parts:

1. Where do I start?: Brainstorming 101 (November 14)
2. Getting Down To Business: Writing The Essay (November 21)
3. The Cutting Room Floor: How to Edit (November 28)

As part of these workshops, the facilitators will provide examples, resources, worksheets, and an assignment to complete during the week that will slowly but surely build your essay.

Following the three group sessions, we will edit your draft and provide feedback by December 14. During this time, you will schedule a one-on-one consultation for individualized support and any questions you may have about applications or college experiences.

What stage of the writing process should I be in?

Great question.

Come as you are! Beginners are more than welcome, and if you already have a few drafts then this Bootcamp will further sharpen your essay.

How much is the program?

The fee of $200 or GH₵1200 will cover the costs for three workshops (including worksheets and resources), a one-hour individual consultation, and an edited draft.

If you feel you need additional consultations or support with supplemental essays, please email us at [email protected] for rates.

MEET THE PROGRAM LEADERS

You can call me Maame.

My undergraduate education at New York University was fulfilling in that during my time there, I won over $300,000 in grants and scholarships, conducted research projects in different countries, and was awarded several honors including the Clyde Taylor Award for Distinguished Work in African American and Africana Studies and the NYU Presidential Service Award.

Following my undergraduate degree, I worked in Zambia as a Princeton in Africa fellow and made a career out of helping other students get accepted into their dream schools and research programs at Johns Hopkins, New York University, Columbia University, and Boston University, to name a few. I have also helped a few others get accepted into competitive programs that have funded their research abroad.

As a current graduate student at the London School of Economics, I am funded by the Spangenberg Family Foundation Scholarship and the LSE Master's Award to study development through the lens of environmental policy.

In my spare time, I write for the Garlic Project and make Youtube videos about cities, budget exploration, and cultural exchange.

You can call me Yaa.

When I was applying to international colleges from Ghana,I couldn’t afford the thousands of dollars college prep centers were charging in addition to the costs of SAT books and application fee - so I had to get creative.Thankfully, I got into my desired universities in the UK and the US and attended Tufts University with a full-need financial aid package.

Wanting to pay forward the generosity I’d been met with, I spent the following winter break editing final year high school students’ college applications for free.

As a writer, curator, and community educator, I have worked on campaigns with Nike, Front/Back, Gallery 1957. I have also had my work featured in The Guardian, Trippin.world, and the Cultural Encyclopedia of African Art.

I was formerly a Gerard Gil Research Fellow, Tufts University Summer Scholar, Afrotectopia Black Imagineer Fellow, and I currently manage A-KRA Studio, an art futurist studio and residency program for early-career digital artists.
